Our Industrial Design BA (Hons) degree will equip you with the skills and understanding necessary for the design of physical objects and devices, focusing on product form, user interaction, CMF (colours, materials, and finishes) and manufacturing, as a part of professional design practice. The course develops specialist skills and abilities in the design and communication of ideas, interactions, and user experiences. It focusses on three-dimensional design, product styling and form, user research, CMF, manufacturing processes and the production of prototypes and finished artifacts. Industrial Design emphasises the ways that products are experienced by users. Throughout the course you will be expected to apply your understanding of branding, futures concepting and the circular economy to the design of future product-service systems. This course shares many of the same elements as the Design BA course. The distinct difference is that instead of having flexibility to select your design specialism during the first two years of study, students will be fixed onto the Industrial Design pathway. It is great for those dedicated to Industrial Design specifically, who want to develop specialist skills and sensitivity in the creative form and aesthetics of contemporary and future manufactured products.

All assessment is conducted through the submission of project coursework, conducted individually and in groups. The work that is assessed is varied and may include: sketchbooks and development folios; low, mid, and hi-fidelity physical and digital prototypes; presentation boards and posters; video and verbal presentations; research reports; and short essays.

For instance this course doesn’t cover the cost of any stationary, printing, books or re-assessments which you might need. All costs for direct engagement in taught modules are included as part of the tuition fees – this includes materials used in the workshops and safety equipment. From time to time students will need to cover the costs of project work and the creation of design folios. This amount will depend on what materials, manufacturing techniques and other creative choices the student makes. The final mark awarded for all assessed submissions bears no relation to the amount of money spent on the work. Students will not gain any marking advantage merely through the costly development of work.
