If your goal is to teach in primary schools this course equips you with the knowledge, skills, and understanding to become confident and effective critical professionals. It offers you a fully rounded professional education through its combination of opportunities to acquire extensive practical experience and the critical knowledge to make sense of it. The first year of the course introduces studying in higher education along with an exploration of key educational themes, policies and issues, with a particular emphasis on the challenges and opportunities found in London’s globalised classrooms. This offers a value-setting for your understanding of primary curricula, pedagogies and learners that facilitates your engagement with an extended work-based placement over the summer period. Preparation for the skills tests leading to admission to postgraduate Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) study is included. In the second year of study you will continue your critical study of curricula and practices by examining a range of cross-curricular themes and reflections on the purposes and goals of education that they provoke. Finding your identity as an educator is supported by exploration of the historical evolution of primary education in England and Wales as well as consideration of the future of schooling in globalised societies characterised by rapid technological, social, and environmental change along with unpredictable cultural encounters. You will bring the elements of your professional and academic understanding together in an extended work-based placement that is the culmination of your degree and that serves as an excellent springboard for progression to QTS.
