Climate change, pollution, loss of biodiversity, environmental mismanagement, energy use, waste management, sustainability, and protection of natural systems are among the planet’s most pressing problems. We’ll help you understand these issues and develop the skills to do something about them. Expect to ‘get your hands dirty’. We get you out of the classroom and into the environment as much as possible, so that you’ll develop the practical skills that employers look for. **More about the Professional Placement Year** A Professional Placement Year (PPY), traditionally known as a sandwich year, is where a student undertakes a period of work with an external organisation for between 9-13 months. The placement occurs between the students' second and third years of undergraduate study. Students can engage in up to 3 placements to make up the total time and are required to source the placement(s) themselves with support from the Careers & Employability Team.

In Year 1, you’ll study Environmental Science from two related perspectives: biological and geographical, which will be covered alongside biodiversity and conservation. You will also select two optional modules. Year 2 will see you study critical aspects of environmental science in more depth, in particular ecology and environmental management. There is also a wide range of optional modules to choose from, which allows you to tailor your programme e.g. around your career aspirations. You’ll have plenty of opportunity to do practical work in the field and laboratory, and an opportunity to enhance your employability skills with a work placement. Finally, in Year 3 you’ll choose a subject to research in depth through your dissertation. You’ll also have the choice of optional modules in topics such as animal behaviour, nature conservation, climatology, marine biology, plants and people, and much more.
