Publishing is one of the UK’s largest creative industries, and one that shapes and presents content across a wide range of subjects. English Literature and Publishing are extremely complementary. This flexible Publishing degree can be tailored to develop and deepen your interests into a satisfying career. In Publishing, you'll learn to critically engage with ideas, research and stories, and to apply creativity and editorial judgement in conceptualising and disseminating engaging content for different audiences. These qualities - combined with English Literature's close reading and intellectually-stimulating analysis of cultural and literary themes - tends to create excellent commissioning editors, content producers, and copywriters. If you choose to study a combined award then in Year One you’ll start by studying both subjects in equal depth, then from Year Two you can choose whether to continue with an equally joint course, or a Major/Minor route.

Year one In your first year, you'll learn the core skills of close reading and critical analysis, editing, copywriting, design, and layout. You'll also explore other subjects and experiment across media, gaining confidence in your making ability. Year two In your second year, you'll focus on a particular period and/or genre to gain a sense of the history of publishing and reading. You'll begin to work collaboratively and discover your own interests. In the process, you'll become familiar with the fundamentals of marketing and learn about the importance of audience, while also experimenting with design and book forms through research and ideas development and making. Year three In your third year, you'll work on high-quality industry projects and live briefs, which will help you develop your specialism and showcase your skills in a professional digital portfolio. You'll also receive specialist publishing industry careers coaching. You'll collaborate on a major enterprise challenge to work on an original idea, inspired by user experience and new technology. You can focus on your interests by taking the English Literature dissertation module and/or the Publishing industry project.

You’ll be assessed by coursework, including portfolios, essays, feature articles, reflective commentaries, and reports. In some modules you’ll share your work through short, informal presentations. Some optional modules include seen and unseen exams. You’ll be taught through industry talks, seminars, creative workshops and studio practice, skills labs, and lectures. You’ll benefit from the innovative learning environment of the UK's first creative-digital studio-based BA Publishing in our state-of-the-art Publishing Lab. We work on-screen and beyond, creating sketchbooks and prototypes; networking, and finding opportunities.
