Course Summary

**This is the 4 year course which includes a Professional Placement Year.** Explore. Question. Challenge. Change the way you see the world with our English Literature degree. - Explore the diverse and surprising ways that literature has shaped how we see the world. - Join a supportive community with a shared passion and curiosity for all things literary. - Develop a wealth of skills and experience that employers need and value – in research, analysis and communication. Literature is diverse. Every text we pick up gives us a different perspective on the world. Bath Spa's English Literature degree introduces you to an incredible range of literary worlds – from Shakespeare’s tragedies to contemporary political drama, Romantic poetry to dystopian eco-fictions, and from the Brontës to the Queer Gothic. In amongst the familiar, you’ll find new and exciting writers whose work will challenge your expectations of what ‘literature’ can be, and you’ll also find original ways of reading and thinking about the classics. You’ll belong to a close, supportive community of learners and researchers, driven by your own passion for reading and guided by your tutors’ innovative teaching and research expertise. We'll work with you as individuals – both in small groups and in one-to-one assessment tutorials – to enable you to dig deeper into the histories, theories and ideas of literature. This close partnership will help you develop the vital skills of analysis, communication and collaboration that employers look for in English Literature graduates – skills that will open up a diverse range of possible careers. Publishing, PR, teaching and journalism are popular paths, and our graduates have gone on to work with leading employers including NewScientist, Oxford University Press, Marie Curie, Bristol Museums and Barclays. You can also choose to further your learning through postgraduate study. **More about the Professional Placement Year** A Professional Placement Year (PPY), traditionally known as a sandwich year, is where a student undertakes a period of work with an external organisation for between 9-13 months. The placement occurs between the students' second and third years of undergraduate study. Students can engage in up to 3 placements to make up the total time and are required to source the placement(s) themselves with support from the Careers & Employability Team.

Course Details - Modules

Each year has a core module as well as a large selection of optional modules to choose from. Two core modules in both Years 1 and 2 provide a common framework that allows you to explore central questions, concepts and theories of literary studies. The structure of the course also allows you to undertake your own extended piece of research as an independent project or dissertation in Year 3. You will also find a wide range of optional modules that allow you focus on specific periods and themes across all three years of study. Year 1 offers historical surveys of key periods from the mid-sixteenth century to the present day as well as a module that introduces you to the history of ‘the book’. In Years 2 and 3 you can choose from modules that explore the many different worlds of literature that include: Shakespeare and his contemporaries; Romantic visions of nature, science and self; experimental and electronic poetry; classical and contemporary crime fiction; Victorian inventions of ‘the modern’; experiences of migration, slavery and ethnic conflict; global environmental issues – and many more. You will find that these modules are organised around a number of key themes running through the programme which address diverse ways of literature’s ‘being in the world’ – the transnational flows of cultures and traditions; theories of body, mind and identity; the histories and futures of the book – but you can choose to study any of the available modules and develop your own path.
