This applied cyber security course aims to equip you with the knowledge, technical competencies and out-of-the-box thinking skills needed to meet the cyber security demands and challenges of the information age. Adopting a holistic approach to the field, you’ll engage the systems, policies, sources of cyber intelligence, response strategies and investigative techniques required to counter the expanding scope and complexity of today’s cyber threat landscape. This course approaches cyber security from a holistic point of view - helping you to understand cyber security from multiple perspectives. By highlighting key principles such as ‘defence in depth’ and by drawing on national level cyber frameworks and guidelines, we aim to expose you to a complete picture of the intentions, motivations, scope and current state-of-play of the cyber security sector. Across the course, you’ll develop knowledge and practical skills that support the protection of systems and data on a variety of levels (such as individual, business, critical national infrastructure) – all supported by a sound understanding of computing principles. You’ll engage not only the technical competencies needed to uphold and enhance organisational resilience, but also learn the essentials of effective cyber security operations. Across the course you'll explore planning methods and tools, study cyber security policies and law, investigate strategies of defence and offence, and gain an appreciation for human factors and training needs.

Course Details - Modules

In year 1 you develop core skills in programming and learn about key topics in cyber security. You’ll gain knowledge of the computer industry to better understand the sector, and consolidate technical skills in procedural programming and web development that will be used across your cyber security course. Modules cover the fundamentals of cyber security, with topics such as intrusion detection and prevention to provide a solid foundation for further study. Content on computer forensics introduce core cybercrime analysis tools and techniques. Year 2 begins with a focus on software as you extend your practical understanding of programming, and investigate methods of enhancing the resilience of computing tools. This is complemented by activities that expose the practices that underpin effective software project management. Following this, you shift attention to the analysis and mitigation of cyber threats where you’ll engage methods of detecting and reacting decisively to intrusions, and discover how to probe system vulnerabilities using techniques such as penetration testing. Your final year takes a look at the wider context of cyber security. First, you’ll take an in-depth look at cyber law, cyber crime and the judicial system, before interrogating methods of protecting national-level critical services. Modules in cyber offence and defence cover the techniques and policies needed to defend business IT systems from increasingly sophisticated cyber attacks.

You’ll be assessed through a combination of reports, presentations and set exercises. Table top exercises, technical challenges and other practical tasks allow you opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of cyber security from an applied perspective.
