Course Summary

This two-year foundation degree in Music Performance and Music Business, awarded by De Montfort University (subject to validation), is an industry-facing programme that offers tuition and training in a wide range of themes and subjects, relevant to the performing musician seeking a career in the industry. This modular course will develop your expertise in music performance, composition, song-writing and production via a range of industry-standard projects and academic work. You will work closely with related discipline areas such as dance, acting and music technology. You will be taught by industry active professionals, use some of the best equipment available in the Midlands and learn relevant work skills. You will have a strong applied understanding of music theory, performance and other related disciplines required by this dynamic sector. You will develop vital industry required skills through the unique work-based learning aspect of the degree, reinforcing individual subject specialisms in commercial environments such as session musicianship, studio recording, music production and composition for Film & TV. Combining musicianship, entrepreneurship and technology, the programme offers access to well-equipped rehearsal spaces, performance areas and recording studios. At Leicester College, we are an Apple Pro Training Centre, a Roland Academy, and an Ableton Certified Training Centre. On completion of this foundation degree, you will have the choice of being able to top-up to a BA in Music, Performance and Technology at De Montfort University.

Course Details - Modules

Individual Instrumental Technique: Develop technical skills and musical insight as a solo performer supported by individual lessons with one of our professional lecturers. Study the evolution and development of either instrument or signature vocal sound. Learning includes a variety of masterclasses and workshops. Live Music Performance: Designed to help gain a range of musical skills, you will study playing in ensembles and improve aural awareness as well as learning how to critique your own music-making and the performances of others. Upon completion, you will be able to plan, promote and execute a showcase that meets the expectations of your audience. Music Theory & Composition: Discover basic principles of contemporary music, unlock the compositional and stylistic elements of different musical genres and be able to illustrate and demonstrate the concepts on the keyboard or a second instrument. Essential Business Skills: Focus key business and industry requirements for the modern musician to positively impact your career. Sound Creation & Manipulation: Explore different music software types and set-up of a modern Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) and the theoretical and practical issues of recording. It gives a contextual grounding and experience in the historical development of electronic music. Introduction to Audio Recording: Work in modern recording studios and investigate the factors affecting sound quality in the recording process. You will learn to use digital recording systems such as mixing consoles and patch bays and will develop a practical and theoretical knowledge of the production chain. Creative Live Technology: Develop knowledge of performance arts and its associated systems and techniques. You will work in a commercial/public-facing venue in Leicester to help build your knowledge and develop technical skills. Advanced Instrumental Technique: Further develop individual musicianship. You will be taught by professional musicians who will introduce you to the advanced skills your instrument or vocal technique. Musicology: Analyse and critique approaches to and explore the aesthetics of contemporary popular music and study its social and cultural importance with case studies ranging from rock ‘n’ roll, soul to hip-hop, pop, and electronica. You will learn how advances in technology have shaped the way in which music is created and produced. Songwriting: Continues to develop songwriting skills by exploring a range of advanced compositional techniques. Explore identity and authenticity in contemporary songwriting by studying a wide range of styles and genres and learn collaborative techniques and approaches. Assessment will be through a portfolio and a final collaborative project. Creative Performance Technology: Develop awareness of the way in which technology can be creatively integrated into a musical performance through study of hardware and software currently being used in performance events as well as examining the way in which contemporary artists use this technology. It provides an opportunity to combine this knowledge to stage your own performance with technology as a central role. Work-Based Learning: Work off-campus in negotiated industry placements to create a work-based portfolio. You will be encouraged to pursue a pathway that is relevant to the course and your career ambitions. Multimedia: Develop the skills to work in flexible ways with different media. In this module you will be introduced to the theoretical and practical elements of producing music and sound for a variety of media applications. Explore the production of audio for a website, multimedia and synchronised visual works. Research: This module provides a broad range of research skills that will be used to develop and support a variety of practical and theoretical applications. Develop research skills in an academic context to facilitate the completion of a piece of independent research.

Course Details – Assessment Method

All assessment is through submission You will be set regular formative assessments which will be used to engage you in a range of activities for each module and we will provide you with supportive feedback. For formative assessments, no formal grading takes place that counts towards either a mark for the module or the overall programme. The feedback given to you in relation to your progress will highlight your strengths, weaknesses and potential attainment in relation to the learning outcomes identified, which will help you develop your skills throughout the course. You will also be asked to submit course work that is graded and counts towards your final mark for the module and overall programme. Each module may contain one or two assessment components. For each assessment activity, there will be a clear brief that as a minimum will indicate the following: • the task(s) you are required to complete • context – the relationship between the module and the aims of the assignment • learning outcomes for the assignment – what you should have learnt as a result of successfully completing the task(s) • assessment/grading criteria, i.e. how your work will be graded and names of members of staff involved with the assignment • references and source material – to help you complete your assignments • date set, submission deadline and grade/feedback turnaround time • what, how and to whom you have to submit your work The final grade on your DMU certificate at the end of this course follows the standard University Foundation Degree classification system of distinction, merit or pass.

Additional Fee Information

Depending on availability, there may be trips that you will need to pay for costing between £5 – £50. Although the College has a stock of instruments, you will benefit from owning your own instrument and are also advised to purchase a pair of good quality headphones in the region of £30 – £50. Access to a suitable computer for running music production applications is also desirable. Applicants from the EU or an EEA country (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein) who start / started living in the UK on or before 31 December 2020 will need to demonstrate they have received ‘EU Settled Status’ or ‘EU Pre-settled Status’ to be able to study with us and be eligible to pay the Home tuition fee as indicated.
