This is the 4 year course which includes a Professional Placement Year. BSc (Hons) Biology at Bath Spa University with a pathway in Human Biology is an applied course equipping students for a fulfilling career in the life sciences industry. This specialist Biology pathway, introduces key anatomy and physiology related to healthy functioning of the human body, at the cell, tissue and organ level. As well as learning these specific topics, you’ll develop a broad range of skills ready to use in a professional environment. The core elements of the Human Biology pathway include applied anatomy and physiology, histology, microbiology and medical biology. - Significant practical components give you applied laboratory and technical skills. - A ‘real-world’ focussed course, preparing you to solve a range of problems and keep-up-to-date with scientific advances. - Cover a range of fundamental topics such as cell biology and genetics, plant, animal and human biology. - Embedded professional development, to make you as employable as possible. **More about the Professional Placement Year** A Professional Placement Year (PPY), traditionally known as a sandwich year, is where a student undertakes a period of work with an external organisation for between 9-13 months. The placement occurs between the students' second and third years of undergraduate study. Students can engage in up to 3 placements to make up the total time and are required to source the placement(s) themselves with support from the Careers & Employability Team.

Course Details – Assessment Method

Year 1 focuses on fundamental topics such as cell biology, genetics, anatomy and physiology, evolution and classification. You’ll also study compulsory elements including the study of the human body; using ‘real time’ data collected on lung and heart function; DNA analysis; and microscopic examination of tissues. You’ll also have a range of optional modules to pick from. Year 2 covers a range of important human, animal and plant biology. You’ll consider important concepts in biology such as ethics, biosecurity, genetics. Human affection from disease will also be examined, including pathophysiology, nutrition and microbiology. Finally, Year 3 sees single honours and major students carrying out a dissertation in their final year. This substantial research project gives you the experience of being responsible for planning, implementing and analysing a human biological study. In addition you may study key concepts in medical biology including medical microbiology, pharmacology, and many more. For more information please refer to our website.
