This blended learning midwifery degree is an innovative and accessible way to begin your pathway to becoming the best midwife you can be. Our flexible approach will allow you to balance the course with other commitments you may have such as caring responsibilities. Developed in partnership with The Leeds Maternity Voices Partnership (MVP) and some of our current students, you’ll benefit from the real life experiences and perspectives of women and families. You’ll have access to all the innovative technologies available at Leeds such as simulation and augmented and virtual reality while still gaining essential practice experience on campus, in practice settings and within Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust and York District Hospital. This course will enable you to become a future-focused midwife who has the competence and confidence to think critically and deliver high-quality, compassionate and evidence-informed care. You’ll develop resilience and become a role model for other professionals and the women, birthing people and families you’ll provide care to. You’ll be taught how to work inclusively with all women, birthing people, their families and others involved in care. **Accreditation** Students who successfully complete this programme will be able to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). **Course content** This course is underpinned by the NMC (2019) Future Midwife standards that recognise the vital role that midwives play in leading and coordinating compassionate, evidence-based care. Our integrated curriculum means that we’ll provide you with a holistic view of care, allowing you to experience aspects of professional practice, applied practice, the cultural/biopsycho-social-spiritual model and evidence-base, whilst recognising the complexity of maternity care provision. You’ll start by considering what it means to be midwife. You’ll learn how to work in partnership with women, birthing people and families. You’ll discover how to be an educator and facilitator, supporting not only other students and team members, but empowering women and birthing people and their families towards optimal health and well-being. You’ll learn to recognise and understand inequalities in health and the effect that this has on access to services as well as ways to reduce these. This will include vulnerable and marginalised populations and explore the relationship between mental health and physical health and the impact of pre-existing conditions. You’ll also learn how to provide care and support to women, birthing people and new-born infants requiring medical, obstetric, neonatal, mental health, social care and other services. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to provide autonomous care and promote optimal health and wellbeing for women, birthing people, new-born infants and families, work effectively within a team, supervise others and be a leader of care. **Clinical placements** Our Midwifery programme consists of 50% academic work and 50% clinical practice. You’ll undertake your placements within Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust and York District Hospital where you’ll rotate through all the clinical aspects of midwifery practice, in the community and on hospital wards – antenatal and postnatal care, transitional care and working on the delivery suite. You’ll have the opportunity to work in a large regional unit and a smaller district unit. You’ll also gain exposure to nursing settings during the course, to enable you to develop relevant and transferrable clinical skills.

In year 1 you’ll develop professional values and the foundations of midwifery practice. Fundamental clinical skills and woman-centred midwifery care will primarily be applied during the antenatal and postnatal periods. You will develop knowledge of physiology and research skills to underpin evidence-based practice. You’ll undertake Midwifery practice in community with some observational hospital-based placements and exposure to general nursing wards to develop your critical skills by reflecting on the maternity services and aspects of care delivery. In year 2 midwifery theory expands to include global and cultural insight into the care of women in the intrapartum period and more complex childbearing in a range of physical, psychological/emotional and social contexts. There’s an equal split between theory and practice. Clinical placements in this year are predominantly hospital based, which includes, Delivery suite, Antenatal ward, Maternity assessment centre, Antenatal clinic, Antenatal day unit, Postnatal ward and Transitional care. In year 3 you’ll hone your skills in order to promote excellence in Midwifery and take greater responsibility in a final community placement, where you’ll care for a small caseload of women under indirect supervision. You will write a 10,000-word dissertation, addressing a specific midwifery-related question in depth. There’s also an opportunity an elective experience at home or abroad.

We use a range of assessment methods, including presentations, group assessments, unseen examinations, OSCEs (Objective Structured Clinical Examinations), along with essays, a final oral examination and the grading of clinical practice. You’ll need to demonstrate the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques, as well as your emerging abilities, skills and competencies. You’ll need to produce work that is typically both evaluative and creative and show you can conduct independent, in-depth enquiry within the discipline. You’ll need to be able to draw on a wide variety of material and be able to evaluate and criticise received opinion.
