Course Details - Modules
The integrated foundation is an opportunity to develop your ideas, skills and confidence. You will begin with a fast-paced introduction to experimentation and play as forms of investigation through active drawing, observation, making and recording. You'll continue your enquiries into materials, processes and concepts, and select media, materials and technologies to create personal solutions in response to course briefs. Finally, you'll specialise in your chosen discipline. You'll prepare and define objectives for a major personal project, assess your own work in relation to that of others, visually investigate and improve your preliminary ideas, and successfully oversee your major personal project from beginning to end. In the second year (first year of the BA Hons), you'll be introduced to visual research methods and animation principles, including image making, stop frame and drawing, and experiment with mark making and intuitive approaches to movement. You'll work with non-narrative and more formal approaches, incorporating storyboarding and film direction/staging/structuring considerations, followed by digital methods of visualisation. You'll also be introduced to 2D and 3D digital approaches to movement and character design, and you’ll explore the use of sound and the relationship between sound and image.
Year three -
In the second year of the BA, you’ll continue to expand your technical and digital skills, and your conceptual knowledge and skills in all aspects of animation. You’ll develop narrative and non-narrative ideas as you work, focusing your interests in an animation documentary/short film. Final Year -
We’ll help you as you use your own creativity, knowledge and practical skills to successfully realise collaborative and interdisciplinary animation projects. You’ll work to a client-led brief, consolidating your experiences, expertise and professional practice into a major project and showreel.
Course Details – Assessment Method
The animation course is entirely assessed by project and coursework such as animation tasks, short films, interactive stories and web apps. Project work is supported by contextual essays, reflective commentaries, sketchbooks, reports, pitches, presentations, debates and b/vlogs.
In a ‘workshop’ setting with tutors and your fellow designers, you'll learn to see your work objectively and to think clearly about the different strategies you might adopt. You'll learn from each other’s mistakes and successes, as well as your own. You'll be urged to take risks and experiment to find your own unique point of view.
