The possibilities for animation have exploded in recent years and this course provides you with the skills to work across a range of existing and emerging sectors such as games development, visual effects (VFX) and film and media production. You’ll start with the fundamentals of animation, then go on to explore various approaches in animation and learn to use a range of different platforms and technologies. You'll learn how to tell stories through animation, and have the opportunity to work on real client-led projects and factual/documentary briefs. Over the three years, you’ll develop the advanced skills you need to become an exciting animator with a unique voice. BA Animation is located in our recently redeveloped, state-of-the-art Locksbrook Campus. Animation is collaborative. Within a strong ‘studio’ culture, you’ll be encouraged to learn together with your fellow students - and students on different courses across the university - as you develop your unique animation voice. You’ll use your initiative and develop practical skills as you work on projects, from concept to final completion and distribution. You’ll also be able take full advantage of the resources available across all of our campuses, including audio recording suites, film and television studios and high-end computing spaces. You’ll be shown how to research and come up with creative concepts and ideas for both wider audiences and niche markets, and you’ll learn how to overcome obstacles as you bring your ideas to life through the production process. With guidance from both industry professionals and experienced tutors, you’ll learn and develop the core skills of animation, as well as more advanced skills to take your ideas to the next level.

Year one - You'll be introduced to visual research methods and animation principles, including image making, stop frame and drawing, and experiment with mark making and intuitive approaches to movement. You'll work with non-narrative and more formal approaches, incorporating storyboarding and film direction/staging/structuring considerations, followed by digital methods of visualisation. You'll also be introduced to 2D and 3D digital approaches to movement and character design, and you’ll explore the use of sound and the relationship between sound and image. Year two - In the second year, you’ll continue to expand your technical and digital skills, and your conceptual knowledge and skills in all aspects of animation. You’ll develop narrative and non-narrative ideas as you work, focusing your interests in an animation documentary/short film. Year three - We’ll help you as you use your own creativity, knowledge and practical skills to successfully realise collaborative and interdisciplinary animation projects. You’ll work to a client-led brief, consolidating your experiences, expertise and professional practice into a major project and showreel.

The animation course is entirely assessed by project and coursework such as animation tasks, short films, interactive stories and web apps. Project work is supported by contextual essays, reflective commentaries, sketchbooks, reports, pitches, presentations, debates and b/vlogs. In a ‘workshop’ setting with tutors and your fellow designers, you'll learn to see your work objectively and to think clearly about the different strategies you might adopt. You'll learn from each other’s mistakes and successes, as well as your own. You'll be urged to take risks and experiment to find your own unique point of view.
