Course Summary

You’ll combine history and the philosophy of science in a joint honours course to explore all aspects of human activity across cultures, whilst taking an interdisciplinary approach to understanding science and its role in society. Throughout your studies, you’ll combine core and optional modules to explore key questions in history and philosophy of science while focusing on issues and questions that suit your interests. Our modules will give you a firm foundation in historical skills and explore ways the past is researched. You’ll benefit from a wide range of optional modules to pursue topics that interest you, from medieval medicine, decolonisation, to histories of everyday life. You’ll gain a range of transferable skills that are attractive to employers, as well as a global, diverse perspective of history. Using philosophical, historical and social perspectives you’ll also gain a critical understanding of the history of scientific thought, the links between magic, science and religion and the nature of scientific knowledge. Leeds has excellent resources for historians, including a wealth of archive material and political documents. The University Library's Special Collections include the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society records, dating from 1819 which played an important role in science education, and the Liddle Collection of personal papers from thousands of people who lived through the First and Second World Wars. You also have plenty to explore at the Leeds Museum of the History of Science, Technology and Medicine at the University.
