Course Summary

This interdisciplinary course allows you to explore cultural practices, institutions and histories across multiple subject areas, including literature, sociology, philosophy, film and television and digital media. Compulsory modules introduce you to methods and concepts which help you to analyse images, texts, technologies and cultural practices. You’ll also choose from a wide range of optional modules which will give you the chance to examine issues such as conflict and its mediation, migration and multicultural societies, social activism and the possibility of utopian change. You can also explore gender and sexual difference, past and future technologies and their impact on our bodies and minds, ecology and our relation to other life forms and the social effects of global communication networks. Using the skills and methods taught in the course, you’ll become a flexible and engaged reader of a wide range of cultural materials and practices. You'll gain a critical perspective on the complexities and challenges facing us in the world today and be able to understand as well as actively engage with their dimensions. You will work alongside staff and students who not only theorise about cultural artefacts but also make them.
