Course Summary

Do you want to learn how you can use literature to explore the world and your potential role in it? Our English Literature programme will give you the opportunity to read and enjoy a wide range of literary texts, including Shakespearean drama, children’s literature and postmodern fiction. Through this course you will learn how to read and analyse poetry and fiction, as well as gain an understanding of how to compare past and contemporary texts in the same genres. You'll have the opportunity to explore literature from the Medieval period to the present day, and you'll look at contemporary topics such as gender and sexuality and postcolonial literature. We'll teach you the skills and techniques of professional scholarship and literary research, developing your confidence in sharing your knowledge and communicating your ideas. We'll encourage you to be creative in responding to texts, giving you the chance to communicate your own particular passion for literature. You'll also have opportunities to create your own literature, with optional creative writing workshops in each year of your degree. If your interest lies in English Language and Linguistics, you can choose to follow the optional strand in this subject area throughout your studies. English at Leeds Trinity has a thriving community of writers, including staff who are published poets and novelists. You'll have the opportunity to take part in our writing events, including an annual Writers' Festival and monthly open mic nights. Experience is crucial, so you'll complete professional work placements during your degree and we’ll encourage you to think about how you can use your skills, knowledge and interests in a future career. **Professional placements** Our students have completed their placements at a wide range of organisations – from film production companies and recording studios, to local newspapers and MPs' offices. If you're interested in teaching, you could also experience working in a primary or secondary school. **Career opportunities** English graduates are sought after by employers in a wide range of areas, including teaching and education, the media, the public sector, journalism, marketing, PR and communications.
