Course Summary

Tourism is an important contributor to many national economies and one of the world’s largest employers - Statista estimated that the total contribution of the travel and tourism industry in 2019 accounted for 10.4 percent of the total GDP worldwide. You will be studying Tourism in north Wales which the Lonely Planet Guide recently listed as “the UK’s new must-visit destination”, but your skills will be relevant to tourism operators worldwide. You will study destination as a tourism product and how to make destinations attractive. Crafting sustainable business strategies, ethical dilemmas facing managers in the business life in the tourism industry, interactions between tourism and the environment, tourist behaviour, destination’s image, branding and positioning and the roles and responsibilities of destination management organisations.  Sustainable tourism planning and policy making processes; stakeholder cooperation and involvement; influence of public (governmental) sector such as taxation, subsidy and regulation. We will evaluate tourism policies from local, national and international industry perspectives and conduct comparative analyses between different countries and regions. Techniques for sustained performance of organizations that operate in the tourism industry such as hotels, airlines and event organizations will be discussed together with the principles of rural tourism, cultural heritage conservation and management. Efforts to minimise the negative socio-cultural impacts of tourism will be investigated and tourism practices that respect the socio-cultural authenticity of host communities will be a focus of discussion. Bangor Business School provides opportunities for experience of work, and the University’s Employability Award enables students to build on their transferable skills through the recognition of activities they become involved in during their university life.  ‘Placement Year’ and 'International Experience Year’ options are available for this course. You will have the opportunity to fully consider these options when you have started your course at Bangor and can make an application for a transfer onto such a pathway at the appropriate time. You can find more information about these options on our website and if you have any questions, please get in touch. If you don’t have the required qualifications for this degree-level course or are looking to re-enter education after time away from study, then a Foundation Year Programme might be the right choice for you. Please see our website for more information.
