Course Summary

"The BSc (Hons) International Strategic Business Management with Foundation Year is aimed at students who have an interest in developing knowledge and understanding of the key aspects of international business management and in particular, who are looking to pursue an international career in business management. It seeks to give students a learning experience that allows them to develop proficiencies that create effective managerial behavior in different organisations in today’s changing business environment. The curriculum and learning and teaching strategy are complemented by guest lectures and ‘live’ workshops to promote independent learning and increasing their employability skills for the future. This knowledge and skills will be further developed and expanded in the years following successful completion of the Foundation Year. The degree programme is designed so that the Foundation Year provides an underpinning year, incorporating both academic and work/professional related learning, for applicants needing to improve their knowledge and understanding of management and its related skills. The year provides students with knowledge and understanding of the key aspects of social sciences along with the necessary skills needed to participate in the undergraduate business programmes at levels 4, 5 and 6.This includes developing numeracy skills with the aim to develop students’ mathematical knowledge and skills in a way which encourages confidence and appreciation of mathematics as a subject and providing students with the mathematical background necessary for business studies at undergraduate level. The Foundation Year also offers a literacy skills module that is designed to support students entering Higher Education at Level 3 wishing to progress to a bachelors in business. Year 1 provides you with a good understanding of the foundations of business. Years 2 and 3 gives you a thorough grounding in the more specialist concepts and applications of strategic management. The programme provides the intellectual underpinnings required for a career in a rapidly changing work environment, a rigorous approach to self-awareness and personal development and a significant exposure to the world of work and its current demands through work experinece opportunities. The degree is ideal for those interested in a future career in International Business or Strategy. The programme offers students a thorough grounding in business and the more specialist concepts and applications of international management and strategy. Through the learning experiences offered, and the skills and competences gained, students will understand effective managerial behaviour developed in today’s complex organizations and turbulent international business environments. Students will have an opportunity to qualify for the CMI Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership (5D1V2) or the Level 5 Certificate in Leadership and Management (5C1V2) dependent on successful completion of modules which are mapped to one of these CMI awards. The emphasis in the course design has been to provide this strong business degree with a focus on employability. The course offers an excellent grounding in knowledge of the key aspects of business management that are covered by a range of modules from the Management and Marketing subject area. In turn, the degree seeks to inculcate in students many of the skills and competences in research, presentation, critical analysis, problem solving, team building and entrepreneurship, which all together should be helpful for future employment opportunities."

In semester 1 students study; • Citizenship • Academic and Report Writing • Numeracy Skills in Context. In Semester 2 students study: • Foundations of Business Management • Foundations of Law • Foundations of Social Sciences The first year will consist of six compulsory modules: • Essentials of Management (20) • Academic and Employability Skills (20) • Principles of Marketing (20) • Accounting and Finance (20) • Quantitative Methods for Business (20) • Managing and Leading People (20) The second year will consist of six compulsory modules: Three modules on Semester 1: • Ethics and Law in the Gig Economy (20) • Corporate Governance and Social Responsibility (20) • Economics for Business (20) Three modules on Semester 2: • Strategic Brand Management and Social Media (20) • International Human Resources Management (20) • Marketing and Sales in a Digital World (20) PLEASE NOTE Students who may want to take LLB modules as electives at Level 6 will undertake one law module (Common Law Method) on a pass/fail system (i.e. non credit-bearing) over the summer between Year Two and Year Three. Students will need to pass the module before undertaking the LLB modules. The third year will consist of six compulsory modules: Three Modules on Sem 1: • Global Leadership and Change Management (20) • International Strategic Management (20) • Creativity Innovation and Entrepreneurship (20) Three modules on Sem 2: • International Commercial Law (20) • Cases in International Strategy (20) • International Business and Global Trade (20)

Course Details – Assessment Method

Assessment is designed to meet the programme and module learning outcomes both academically and professionally in formative form including the preparation and feedback from seminars, workshops, tests and presentations, as well as in summative assessments that contributes to the grade, including individual coursework, group work, projects, in-class presentations, and exams. In particular, as is usual in the sector, this programme involves a considerable amount of group work and group assessment, i.e., as much as 50% of the assessment on selected modules may take this form.
