Course Summary

The BSc Business Management with Corporate Law with Foundation and Placements Years is aimed at students who have an interest in developing knowledge and understanding of the key aspects of business and management, coupled with an understanding of the legal framework that corporations operate within. This degree should be of interest to those students wishing to pursue a career in corporations within the commercial transactions or business development areas, where legal aspects together with financial elements are of key relevance. The degree programme is designed so that the Foundation Year provides an underpinning year, incorporating both academic and work/professional related learning, for applicants needing to improve their knowledge and understanding of management and its related skills. The year provides students with knowledge and understanding of the key aspects of social sciences along with the necessary skills needed to participate in the undergraduate business programmes at levels 4, 5 and 6.This includes developing numeracy skills with the aim to develop students’ mathematical knowledge and skills in a way which encourages confidence and appreciation of mathematics as a subject and providing students with the mathematical background necessary for business studies at undergraduate level. The Foundation Year also offers a literacy skills module that is designed to support students entering Higher Education at Level 3 wishing to progress to a bachelors in business. The first year covers the foundation elements of business management. Years 2 and 3 cover the legal area in more depth and develops your employability skills. The programme provides the intellectual underpinnings required for a career in a rapidly changing work environment, a rigorous approach to self-awareness and personal development and a significant exposure to the world of work and its current demands through work experience opportunities. Through the learning experiences offered, and the skills and competences gained, students will understand effective managerial behaviour developed in today’s complex organizations and turbulent business environments. Some of the Law modules will be shared with LLB students The emphasis in the course design has been to provide this strong business degree with a focus on employability. The course offers an excellent grounding in knowledge of the key aspects of business management and law that are covered by a range of modules from the Management and law subject areas. In turn, the degree seeks to inculcate in students many of the skills and competences in research, presentation, critical analysis, problem solving, and team building, which all together should be helpful for future employment opportunities.

Course Details - Modules

In semester 1 students study; • Citizenship • Academic and Report Writing • Numeracy Skills in Context. In Semester 2 students study: • Foundations of Business Management • Foundations of Law • Foundations of Social Sciences The first year will consist of six compulsory modules: • Essentials of Management (20) • Academic and Employability Skills (20) • Principles of Marketing (20) • Accounting and Finance (20) • Quantitative Methods for Business (20) • Managing and Leading People (20) PLEASE NOTE Students who may want to take LLB modules as electives will undertake one law module (Common Law Method) on a pass/fail system (i.e. non credit-bearing) over the summer between Year One and Year Two. Students will need to pass the module before undertaking the LLB modules. The second year will consist of six compulsory modules: Three modules on Semester 1: • Ethics and Law in the Gig Economy (20) • Corporate Governance and Social Responsibility (20) • Contract Law (20) Three modules on Semester 2: • Company Law (20) • Business Law 1 (20) • Data and Intellectual Property Protection (20) Students who select to undertake a placement year in industry will spend the penultimate year of their BSc programme working for an organisation under academic supervision. This supervised work placement will connect them with the employment market. Students will gain job-related skills, awareness of the structure of an organisation, practical problem-solving, responsibility, interpersonal skills in professional settings, and understanding of the unwritten rules of workplaces. They will have the opportunity to reflect on their learning, supervised by an academic supervisor. They will also enrich their CVs with important practical experience. Level 6 will consist of five compulsory modules and one optional module: Three Modules on Semester 1: • Global Leadership and Change Management (20) • International Strategic Management (20) • Employment Law (20) Two core modules on Semester 2: • International Commercial Law (20) • Business Law 2 (20) One optional module on Sem 2 out of: • International Business and Global Trade (20) • Competition Law (20)

Course Details – Assessment Method

Assessment is designed to meet the programme and module learning outcomes both academically and professionally in formative form including the preparation and feedback from seminars, workshops, tests and presentations, as well as in summative assessments that contributes to the grade, including individual coursework, group work, projects, in-class presentations, and exams. In particular, as is usual in the sector, this programme involves a considerable amount of group work and group assessment, i.e., as much as 50% of the assessment on selected modules may take this form.
