Course Summary

Lancaster University is ranked as one of the top universities in the UK. Building on our institutional reputation for excellence, the new BA (Hons) Architecture programme aims to be one of the UK’s leading destinations for aspiring architects. The degree is made up of a series of modules, which will cover: Advanced digital design skills Advanced building design Building materials, sustainability and site context Professional practice and employability When you start your degree we'll assume no prior knowledge of Architecture, but that you do share our enthusiasm and passion for the subject. Alongside lectures, small group seminars and practical workshops you will have one-to-one tutorials and plenty of opportunity for hands-on work in the studio. You’ll get to know others on the course through project work and group work. Our teaching staff are architecture professionals, and much of the course work will be in the form of portfolios. Lancaster University School of Architecture You'll be joining our new School of Architecture where we are exploring the future of architectural practice through experimentation and research into issues of global importance. You will have the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge that will enable you to be agile and ethical in your practice, and ready to meet the challenges posed by contemporary global problems such as climate emergency, work force automation, data security and the ageing population. Our design studios and immediate surrounding environment provide space to reflect, debate and create. Lancaster’s green campus features woodland and ponds, and is situated close to the Lake District World Heritage Site. It is a perfect location from which to investigate the global climate emergency, and to test alternate means of working and living using the sustainable and lean construction methods and materials. The School’s areas of interest are inspired from our unique geographic position on the edge of the industrial north of England yet surrounded by a wealth of natural beauty. We are also ideally positioned to use resources on campus such as the Ruskin Library, the Lancaster Environmental Centre, and the new Lancaster Health Innovation campus, and we are excited about the proposed second Eden Project which is due to open in nearby Morecambe in 2023. Our facilities As well as an individual working space in our studios, you'll use our workshops which provide facilities for model-making at various scales, encompassing hand tools and digital fabrication equipment including 3D printers and laser cutters. Digital facilities will include laser scanning, visualisation equipment and large-scale printing, as well as access to the full Adobe Creative Suite and other specialist software. Preparing for a career in Architecture Lancaster University places a strong emphasis on providing opportunities to gain the skills, experience and support that will enable you to fulfil your career ambitions, which is why our students are so successful at gaining professional level work after they graduate. While many students on this programme will wish to become an Architect, a degree in Architecture will also provide a platform to start a career in related jobs in the field such as urban design, planning, conservation, property developing and other design areas. The Architecture course is designed to prepare you for the first stage of your professional career, with a strong understanding of building design and construction including the technical components and processes of realisation. This includes construction detailing, materials, specification and technological innovations in architectural technology. The BA (Hons) Architecture is fully accredited by the ARB (Architects Registration Board) which is the first part of the professional pathway to becoming an architect.
