Course Summary

Set in 600 acres of countryside in North Staffordshire, we have one of the largest and most beautiful campuses in Britain. We’re proud to be No.2 in England for Student Satisfaction with Course (Guardian University League Table, 2020), investing more than £140m in our campus in the last ten years, including £45m new science laboratories. In 2021 we were proud to be awarded Sustainability Institution of the Year at the prestigious Green Gown Awards as part of our mission to become a carbon neutral campus by 2030. We're committed to supporting you to achieve your career goals, and have a dedicated Careers and Employability team who can assist you to navigate your options beyond Keele. As both a medium of mass entertainment and a mode of expression, film is a powerful art form. Studying Film at Keele provides insight into its forms, technologies and cultural importance, both historically and now. Film Studies is an exciting, diverse and creative area of academic study. Studying Film at Keele offers you the chance to focus intensively on the history and theory of the medium, or to study it alongside Creative Writing as an integrated single honours programme. You can also combine the study of Film with other related subjects, such as Media and English Literature. You will have the opportunity to apply your theory of film in the form of practical work, developing scriptwriting and filmmaking skills. Taking a Film Studies degree at Keele also offers you the opportunity to learn a language, study abroad for a semester or a year, and do a work placement through one of our exciting local partnerships. As a Film student at Keele, then, you will learn to employ theoretical, historical and cultural strands of enquiry to analyse both classical and contemporary cinema, as well as making creative connections between Film and other art forms, such as literature and photography. Indicative areas of the course include: • Modern European Film and Television • Introduction to Television Studies • Gender and the Cinematic Gaze • Global Popular Cinemas • Science Fiction Cinema: Utopias and Dystopias • Documentary: Theory and Practice • Race and Sexuality on Screen • Approaches to Screenwriting • Crime in Neoconservative America • World Cinemas in the 21st Century
