Course Summary

**About Keele** Set in 600 acres of countryside in North Staffordshire, we have one of the largest and most beautiful campuses in Britain. We’re proud to be No.2 in England for Student Satisfaction with Course (Guardian University League Table, 2020), investing more than £140m in our campus in the last ten years, including £45m new science laboratories. In 2021 we were proud to be awarded Sustainability Institution of the Year at the prestigious Green Gown Awards as part of our mission to become a carbon neutral campus by 2030. We're committed to supporting you to achieve your career goals, and have a dedicated Careers and Employability team who can assist you to navigate your options beyond Keele. **Foundation Year** If you do not meet the requirements for direct entry onto a degree programme, our foundation year can provide an alternative route into your degree. The course provides preparation for the academic skills required for degree level study, delivering the opportunity to develop the questioning and analytical skills required for progression into your chosen programme. Upon meeting the progression criteria and successfully completing the foundation year, you will automatically progress into your Keele undergraduate degree with the confidence that you have the skills, and knowledge needed to successfully complete your course. We offer a September and January intake across many of our Foundation Year programmes with our January start point offering a compressed timeframe (January-July) but without the loss of teaching weeks or acceleration of teaching and content delivery. Unless otherwise stated, the UCAS equal consideration deadline for all undergraduate applications, except those with a 15 October deadline is 26 January. For our January 2023 foundation year entry, the application deadline is 20 December 2022. Unfortunately we are unable to offer a January intake for the Veterinary Medicine and Surgery degree with Foundation Year and other health-related Foundation Year degrees. You can switch between the September and January UCAS pages by using the blue 'course options available' button above. We welcome direct applications for the January entry point. Contact our Admissions team to apply now. Email: admissions@keele.ac.uk. **BA (Hons) English and American Literature** After you have completed your Humanities Foundation Year, you can progress on to studying English and American Literature at degree level. Are you excited by exploring the fascinating connections between two different national literatures? Are you passionate about engaging imaginatively and critically in the context of English and American Literature? Encountering the full chronological range of the two national literatures, you'll be encouraged to develop critical arguments and technical analysis, enabling you to graduate as a confident literary critic. Immerse yourself in literary texts from the English Renaissance to contemporary American graphic novels. As an English and American Literature student at Keele, you'll examine the full chronological range of English and American literature, considering their direct intersections from the nineteenth century onwards. You might study poets like Lord Byron, Derek Walcott and Allen Ginsberg, dramatists including Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde and Tennessee Williams, and novelists such as Harriet Beecher Stowe, Henry James and Jackie Kay. You'll tackle a range of issues and unprecedented challenges of our cultural moment, which could include decolonisation, sustainability and the environment, gender and sexuality, migration, political extremism, or the role of literature as an arbiter of truth in an era of information overload and fake news. We are committed to enabling you to tailor your degree. Alongside the compulsory English and American Literature modules, you are given the flexibility to choose optional modules which not only align with your literary interest, but also your career aspirations.
