**As well as your main Imperial degree (MSci), you will also receive the award of the Associateship of the Royal College of Science (ARCS) on completion of this course.**
Mathematics at Imperial aims to present a wide range of mathematical ideas in a way that develops your critical and intellectual abilities. The Department is home to several Fellows of the Royal Society and international prize winners, and our degrees are built around our research expertise in four core areas:
- Pure Mathematics
- Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Physics
- Mathematical Finance
- Statistics
You will cover both topics that are a direct continuation of those at A-level and those that introduce you to new ways of thinking, such as the logical structure of arguments, the proper definition of mathematical objects, the design of sophisticated mathematical models, and the legitimacy of computations.
The MSci Mathematics with a Year Abroad (G104) course offers you the chance to spend your third year studying abroad at a leading global university, challenging yourself in a different academic and cultural environment. You will normally be taught in the language of the host country, and free language classes are available at the College to help you prepare.
Limited places means competition for placements abroad is strong, so only students who are on track for a 2:1 or above by the time of selection in year two will be eligible. After your year abroad, you will build on the BSc programme with an integrated year taught at Master's level, in which you choose from a wide selection of advanced modules and complete a research project.
All of our courses follow the same core curriculum for the first two years, covering key areas of mathematics such as algebra, differential equations, and probability and statistics. The high level of shared content in the first two years means it is usually possible to transfer between any of our maths courses during this time (within stated restrictions) however, transfer onto the Year Abroad course must normally be done in your first year. If you are an international student, transferring to a different course could have an impact on your Tier 4 visa, but our International Student Support Team are here to help advise and support you.
Successful candidates will receive one offer for one course from the Department, so you should apply to just one. There is no advantage in applying to multiple courses within Mathematics.
