Course Summary

The BA (Hons) Criminology is built upon the investigation, analysis and evaluation of the social, cultural, economic and environmental causes of crime and criminal behaviour. During the programme you will explore contemporary criminological theory and research that seeks to explain the existence of crime through the identification and examination of criminogenic and circumstantial factors and pressures. You will investigate crimes of the powerful and powerless; explore the causes and effects of violent criminal behaviour; analyse the intersecting aspects of gender, ethnicity and crime, and evaluate the extent to which individual, social and cultural consequences result from particular forms of formal intervention. The BA (Hons) Criminology will also give you a range of practical, academic, creative, managerial and technical skills.

Course Details – Assessment Method

The assessment approach is an incremental step from the Hull College Foundation Degree in Criminology in that students have been introduced to the value and detail of the assessment strategies. The assessments have been produced with employability at its core. A seminar will demonstrate control, restraint and persuasion whilst putting forward their own assertions and actively listening to others. This is a skill that has been developed over the Foundation Degree with discussions and group work, now it is formalised to reflect a real life meeting or forum such as they may experience in multiagency workings. The report and policy briefing paper have been designed to enable students to create them in industrial settings, perhaps individually or working with others, but most importantly, to be able to read with confidence such papers and reports from government offices or organisations effectively and efficiently.
