Course Summary

From smartphones to cashpoints, we use electronics every day of our lives. Electronics are crucial in a wide range of industries too, as it's at the heart of everything from manufacturing processes, to the provision of services, green technologies, and logistics management. These industries are looking to the future of engineering, and this is where you could come in. This STEM course aims to give you the underpinning skills to be at the forefront of the future of engineering and open up lots of career options within the electronic engineering industry, where you could make a difference to the world we live in. The course is designed to give you a broad understanding of: * Electronic systems * Communications and control * Digital and analogue systems * Embedded computer-based systems You’ll also have the chance to carry out project work to research a specialised area that interests you. If you find you have an interest in an area you may not have encountered before, the first year is common with the other courses in our Electronic Engineering suite. This means there is the opportunity for you to switch degrees to one of our other electronic engineering specialisms. You'll also learn through EnABLE (Engineering in an Activity Based Learning Environment), our new initiative that provides you with an opportunity to work in teams with other students to solve real engineering challenges and develop skills relevant to industry. During your studies you have the chance to take a placement after your second year. You could work in the industry and put what you’ve learnt into practice. We’ll also give you the opportunity to take part in national competitions like the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Formula Student (http://www.teamhare.co.uk/), Railway Challenge (http://hudrail.co.uk/) and UAS (http://teamhawk.hud.ac.uk/) (or comparable design and build team projects). You’ll be taught by professional engineers, many of whom have worked in the industry. If you apply for the BEng(Hons) route to begin with and then achieve a yearly average grade of 60% or more during your first two years, then you could go on to the integrated Master’s MEng course. That means you could study for an extra year to gain an even deeper understanding of the subject. The course is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council. Consequently you could become a registered Incorporated Engineer (IEng) if you graduate, and following further learning you could also be on your way to becoming a registered Chartered Engineer (CEng). The IET is one of the world’s leading professional societies for the engineering and technology community and IET accreditation is recognised around the world as an indicator of quality. Our relationship with the IET means that they feel our course content is relevant to the needs of industry, which could give you a potential advantage when looking for a job as employers may ask for graduates with accredited degrees. This accreditation is reviewed on a regular basis.
