From sending a text to using the cashpoint, we interact with computers every day. Computing helps enhance our quality of life and can be used to meet the challenges that ongoing advances in technology create. This course helps you acquire the knowledge and skills that are invaluable in the computing industry. In this course, we aim to help you explore a range of topics, such as: * Programming * Software engineering * Computer networking and security * Mathematics * Mobile computing We'll look at both the theory and practical side of things to help you develop your abilities. Having knowledge of both makes all the difference when you seek employment in this rapidly expanding industry. Your tutors will encourage you to identify problems, and then work out how to solve them using software. You might get involved in developing software solutions that use artificial intelligence (AI). Or perhaps you’ll look at how to use computing applications in engineering or scientific experiments to combat environmental problems. In Year 1 you’ll follow a core computing programme that gets the fundamental skills and knowledge to prepare you for more advanced topics. Then from Year 2 on, you’ll have the chance to take an option module in each year. This enables you to tailor your studies to your specific interests. During your studies you’ll be taught through a combination of formal lectures, tutorial groups, practical laboratory work and seminars. The course is partly accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS), which means you will have fulfilled some of the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered IT Professional, Chartered Incorporated Engineer or Registered IT Technician. Our course also gives you the chance to apply your skills in the real-world with an optional one-year placement. Previous students have undertaken placements at companies like IBM, Microsoft, Hewlett Packard, HBOS and British Airways. BCS accreditation is awarded to courses that provide a solid foundation in computing. It provides an indicator of quality to you and potential employers. Courses are accredited for Chartered IT Professional (CITP) status, BCS's own Chartered qualification. This course is accredited to also partially meet the requirements for CEng status. Accreditation also gives you a potential advantage when looking for a job as some employers may ask for graduates with accredited degrees. Additional costs: On this course optional field trips may be offered to destinations in the UK, which you would need to pay for if you choose to attend. Previous trips in recent years have included a visit to The National Museum of Computing for 1 day at a cost of £20.00 per student. Other field trips may cost more.

Course Details – Assessment Method

Assessment is varied and includes coursework, log books, presentations and demonstrations, as well as formal examinations. There are opportunities for group working, in addition to individual assessments. Within the second year you will take part in the Design Challenge, a team based project that has an assessed component. Different organisations will present you with a real challenge they are facing and as part of a team, made up of students from across different courses, you will work together over the course of one week to create a solution. Your module specification/course handbook will provide full details of the assessment criteria applying to your course.

Entry is also possible from the Engineering Foundation Year. To progress onto this course from the Foundation Year you must pass all modules and achieve an average mark of 40% or above.
