Course Summary

Our courses include the use of modern industry-standard software and equipment, use of analysis tools, CAD, electronic testing, material testing and automation. An ideal course for Electro-Mechanical Engineers. **Why Choose this Course?** This is an excellent opportunity to study engineering in a college environment which still could leave students with the flexibility of studying further engineering at either a Full Time university BEng course or a Higher Apprenticeship. The purpose of BTEC Higher Nationals in Engineering is to develop you as professional, self-reflecting individuals so that you can meet the demands of employers in the rapidly evolving engineering sector and adapt to a constantly changing world. The qualifications also aim to widen access to Higher Education and enhance the career prospects of those who undertake them. Successful completion of the HNC (Year 1) entitles you to study a further year to gain a Level 5 HND in Engineering (Year 2). **Course Structure** On this two year HND course at HSDC South Downs, you will study the following units: **Year 1 (HNC)** - Engineering Design - Engineering Science - Engineering Mathematics - Managing a Professional Engineering Project - Materials, Properties and Testing - Automation, Robotics and PLC - Production Engineering for Manufacture - Quality and Process Improvement **Year 2 (HND)** - Research Project - Professional Engineering Management - Virtual Engineering - Further Mathematics - Further PLCs - Lean Manufacturing - Embedded Systems This level of study requires additional hours allocated each week outside of College for research and writing reports. You will be required to attend College for three days a week. On successful completion of Year 1 HNC, students can progress on to Year 2 HND Engineering. **Teaching and Learning** Classes are informal and incorporate a variety of teaching and learning methods e.g. discussion, lectures, group work and practical sessions. The course will be delivered over two years as a full time course, over three days a week. **Assessment** Assessment is made through completion of assignment based activities, reports, coursework, practical work, independent study and research. Each unit is marked at Pass, Merit or Distinction grade and these will be used to calculate a final overall grade for the qualification. **Industry Links** The course has been designed with local employer needs in mind and can be used as part of a Levy Funded Higher Apprenticeship. **Progression** Following the completion of this course, you can progress to a top-up degree at university or Degree Apprenticeship. Career destinations include Design Engineers, Electrical or Electronic Engineers and Mechanical Engineers. **Entry Criteria** If you have recently been in education, the entry profile is likely to include one of the following: – A* to C (9 – 4 under the new system) grade in GCSE Mathematics – a sound mathematical ability is essential – A BTEC Level 3 qualification in Engineering – A Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in relevant subjects such as Mathematics, Physics etc. **About Us** Our campus has a range of modern facilities to enhance students learning experience including music recording studios, gym facilities, a nursery, to our own working restaurant and beauty salon and much more. There are frequent buses from the surrounding areas and local train stations in Havant and Cosham. Located off Junction 4 of the A3(M), the College has extensive free onsite parking.
