Course Summary

“Paramedics provide high quality clinical care and treatment to patients in a pre-hospital environment including clinical interventions and invasive techniques such as intubation, cannulation, IV injections, defibrillation and other advanced diagnostic and treatment procedures where necessary” (Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust, 2021). This course: • Is designed around a spiral curriculum, recommended by the College of Paramedics • Allows learners to incorporate knowledge, skills and behaviours to enable them develop effectively from year one where students will be able to demonstrate competence, to year three where students will be able to critically evaluate and synthesise knowledge and apply it to practice. • Can improve student’s employability and future employment prospects. • In partnership with WAST, includes placements across the whole of North Wales, supported by Practice Educators. KEY COURSE FEATURES • Study Paramedic Science in North Wales and support local services during placements. • The programme has been fully developed with the paramedic professional in mind, benchmarked against the HCPC and College of Paramedics curriculum guidance. • Expereince a truly integrated interprofessional approach to teaching and learning • Learn through Simulation Based Education (SBE) which facilitates the professional development of individuals and clinical teams and ultimately benefit patients. • The recent COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the value of all healthcare professionals using innovative simulation approaches, modalities and tools. We have invested and been awarded bids amounting to approximately £400,000 from HEIW.

Course Details - Modules

In partnership with WAST, placements will be provided across the whole of North Wales. Placements will include fundamental care (care home, ward area and hospice), patient assessment areas such as ED, GP surgery and urgent care, critical care, including ITU and HDU, mental health and LD placements, child and family, hear and treat environments such as 111 and emergency ambulance placements. Theory sessions will be delivered using a variety of learning and teaching methods utilising a blended approach, considering Wrexham Glyndwr University Active Learning Framework, including lectures, problem-based learning, asynchronous discussions, seminars and skills acquisition sessions. Access to virtual learning environments such as Moodle and Safemedicate - a learning package to assist in the development of numeracy skills and medicines management, are integral features of your learning. The programme builds in terms of academic level and professional responsibility as it progresses throughout the three years enabling you to become more self-directed in your learning with an emphasis towards the end of your programme on leadership and development as a registered nurse. YEAR 1 (LEVEL 4) In year one you will focus on the fundamental assessment, communication and clinical skills required to practice as a caring, kind, compassionate professional who values and respects the individual needs of the patient, family and carers of all ages. MODULES • Fundamentals of Paramedic Practice (40 credits) • Assessment and management of the critically ill patient (40 credits) • Clinical Skills I (Paramedic skills for patients throughout the lifespan) (40 credits) YEAR 2 (LEVEL 5) In year two you will focus on evidence based practice and research, law and ethics, care of the complex patient MODULES • Developing the evidence based practitioner (40 credits) • Clinical skills II (Complexities and decision making from cradle to grave) (40 credits) • Pharmacology, applied physiology and social science (40 credits) YEAR 3 (LEVEL 6) In year three you will focus on research, managing change, empowering patients and the complexities of decision making in paramedic practice. MODULES • Researching and enhancing Paramedic Practice (40 credits) • Holistic management of complex patients (40 credits) • Leading and managing Paramedic Practice (40 credits) The information listed in this section is an overview of the academic content of the programme that will take the form of either core or option modules.
