Mental ill health is estimated to cost the Welsh economy £7.2billion each year. It can arise from a combination of factors and people living with mental health issues may require support from a range of services such as housing, social enterprise and community organisations as well as statutory health and social care services.
That’s why it’s vital there are knowledgeable practitioners to fill roles which will help to reduce the stigma, disadvantage and inequality experienced by people living with mental health issues and to work within communities to promote good mental health and wellbeing.
This course:
•is orientated towards prevention and recovery
•combines theory with work based learning to ensure that our graduates are perfectly placed to access a variety of careers in this ever-developing sector
Students will:
•work on assignments that reflect the real life skills needed by future employers
•develop their self-awareness, emotional literacy, reflective and interpersonal skills – all of which are key to becoming an effective and competent practitioner
•be assigned a personal tutor on enrolment who will support them throughout their time on the programme
•benefit from the department’s open door policy and established peer mentor system

Year 1 (Level 4)
In the first year, students undertake modules which will provide the foundation knowledge to enable you to explore key areas across the health sector.

Year 2 (Level 5)
During the second year, students will be introduced to law and social policy and to social prescribing. You will also learn about factors contributing to mental health issues across the lifespan, ways of promoting and improving mental wellbeing and the impact of providing support to people who have long term care needs.
The first work based learning experience is also introduced at level 5.

Year 3 (Level 6)
The focus in the final year is on employability, with topics such as leadership & enterprise being studied. You will also study the impact of stigma on society and the individual, and look at ways in which this can be overcome. There is a second work based element at this level, so you will have the opportunity to experience working within another field of interest.

Reflecting the diversity of skills required by employers, the course employs a range of assessment strategies including presentations, information leaflets and campaign strategies. We work closely with the disability support team to ensure that assessments also meet student needs.
