Course Summary

The aim of the PGDE (Primary) is to provide a route to qualified teacher status for graduates whose qualifications satisfy the requirements for entry into the teaching profession in Scotland. It aims to produce reflective and competent teachers, sensitive to the demands of the pupils and the job, responsive to a changing education system and committed to continuing their own professional development throughout their careers. If you are an aspiring teacher, this programme will provide you with the knowledge, skills and values you need to become the committed professional necessary for today’s schools. The programme consists of 18 weeks of study in the University and 18 weeks of school experience in our partner schools. As well as offering courses in educational and curricular issues, the programme also highlights the importance of practitioner enquiry. This systematic reflection on teaching in the classroom gives the programme its distinctive Masters character. Catholic Teacher's Certificate The Scottish Government expects the School of Education to provide numbers of teachers to teach in Catholic schools in Scotland. This particular programme provides support for, and emphasis on, the initial teacher education of those who intend to teach in Catholic schools. The design of the programme necessarily reflects the sector requirements and prospective applicants should consider this before applying. The School welcomes applications from all qualified candidates. In the selection procedures for interview, priority is given to those who meet the entry requirements and who indicated in their personal statement, their intention to teach in Catholic schools and to seek the Catholic Teacher's Certificate in Religious Education.
