Our BA Literature and Art History five-year option, will be suitable for you if your academic qualifications do not yet meet our entrance requirements for the four-year version of this course and you want a programme that increases your subject knowledge as well as improves your academic skills in order to support your academic performance.This course includes a foundation year (Year Zero), followed by a further four years of study, including a study abroad year. During your Year Zero, you study three academic subjects relevant to your chosen course as well as a compulsory academic skills module. Our distinctive curriculum allows you to study the relationship between text and imagery. Understanding visual history enables you to complement and enhance your exploration of different textual sources, from the earliest modern works to the literature and theory of the present day, in a variety of contexts. You will develop a solid grounding in the history of art and other forms of visual culture, including the ideas and forces that shaped their production, distribution and reception. You enjoy a programme of study trips at home and abroad and combine your interests with vocational modules designed with exhibitions and curations in mind. We are also home to our own art gallery with over 750 pieces, the Essex Collection of Art from Latin America (ESCALA). Literature is introduced in you through a series of seminal works in drama, poetry and narrative which have helped to articulate the literature of England and Europe both past and present. By adopting and practising close reading skills you develop your abilities in analysis and interpretation, and grow in confidence from the beginning of your undergraduate study. You spend your fourth year studying abroad allowing you to experience other cultures and languages, to broaden your degree socially and academically, and to demonstrate to employers that you are mature, adaptable, and organised.
