The field of genetics is central to the life sciences. Many of the major landmarks in biology relate to genetics: Darwin’s theory of evolution, discovery of the structure of DNA and the sequencing of the human genome have all contributed to changing our understanding of biology. Genetics is an important, exciting and wide-ranging field to study and the application of genetics in healthcare and research means the prospects for graduates have never been better. Your final year project allows you to contribute to this field, approaching unanswered scientific questions using state-of-the-art-techniques; popular topics have ranged from the genetics of cancer and regulation of the immune response, to population genetics and synthetic biology. Located in the School of Biological Sciences, we are one of the largest schools at the University. Two-thirds of our research is rated "world-leading" or "internationally excellent" (REF 2014).

We will consider science based Access to Higher Education Diplomas. Advice can be provided on an individual basis.

or three Higher Level certificates with 544. Either must include Higher Level Biology with a minimum of grade 4, plus Standard Level Maths or Maths Studies grade 4, if not taken at Higher Level. Maths in the IB is not required if you have already achieved GCSE Maths at grade C/4 or above or 4 in IB Middle Years Maths. We are happy to consider a combination of separate IB Diploma Programmes at both Higher and Standard Level. Exact offer levels will vary depending on the range of subjects being taken at higher and standard level, and the course applied for. Entry requirements for students studying BTEC qualifications are dependent on subjects studied. Advice can be provided on an individual basis. The standard required is generally at Distinction level.
