Biomedical Science

Course Summary

Biomedical Science applies the concepts of biochemistry and cell biology to the study of health and disease in the human body. Based in the School of Biological Sciences, you’ll learn about the onset, progression, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and you will be taught by research-active academic experts and practising Biomedical Scientists from our local hospitals. This broadly based degree is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Sciences (IBMS) and prepares you to follow a professional NHS career or research. In addition, if you choose to undertake an NHS laboratory placement year (which we arrange for you in one of the hospitals in our consortium) you may register as an independent Biomedical Scientist. Located in the School of Biological Sciences, we are one of the largest schools at the University. Two-thirds of our research is rated "world-leading" or "internationally excellent" (REF 2014).

Standard Qualification Requirements

Including Chemistry or Biology plus a second science or Mathematics.

We will consider science based Access to Higher Education Diplomas. Advice can be provided on an individual basis.

Including Higher Level Chemistry or Biology and a second science or Mathematics grade 5, plus Standard Level Mathematics or Maths Studies grade 4, if not taken at Higher Level. We are also happy to consider a combination of separate IB Diploma Programmes at both Higher and Standard Level. Please note that Maths in the IB is not required if you have already achieved GCSE Maths at grade C/4 or above.

Entry requirements for students studying BTEC qualifications are dependent on subjects studied. Advice can be provided on an individual basis. The standard required is generally at Distinction level.

In addition all applicants require GCSE Mathematics at grade C/4 or above (or equivalent).
