Many of the basic concepts underlying Western society were expressed for the first time in ancient Greek or Latin. Together with French, they are the languages of highly influential literary and cultural works. Studying French and Classics helps you to understand the modern world, while shedding light on the past. **French** Studying this programme will give you near-native fluency, thanks to four years of intensive training, including a year abroad. You will explore French culture, including Francophone literature and cinema, fascinating political history, social movements and philosophical ideas. Our courses cover material from the Middle Ages to the 21st Century and include specialist options taught by leading experts in their field. Topics include post-colonial studies and gender studies, among others. **Classics** Classics combines both linguistic and philological work. You will acquire sound grammatical understanding of both ancient Greek and Latin. This includes a good knowledge of vocabulary, and of the different uses of each language by various authors. You will also study two civilisations that used the classical languages in a range of contexts, including: * politics * religion * philosophy This will give you an appreciation of the rapport between different ancient societies, as well as an understanding of their relationships with language and literature. **Why Edinburgh?** We are unique in Scotland in offering students a full academic year abroad within the four-year honours programme, regardless of whether you spend the year studying or working.
